Norfolk Broads

The Broads were formed in Medieval times when people dug for peat, then later when the water level rose, they flooded. During Victorian times, they were used for transporting heavy loads. Nowadays they are used for pleasure, and are a popular boating centre and bird habitat.

The Broads encompass a 125 mile web of inland waterways, formed by various broad, shallow lakes, lying along 5 major rivers. They are a nationally protected wetland, and an important area for wildlife. Home to rare plants and animals, and also many birds, the Broads are fortunate enough to have several wildlife reserves situated in the area.

Throughout the Broads there are plenty of places to moor up, pretty villages and market towns to explore, and pubs to visit. There are also numerous museums, castles, churches, mills and windpumps to explore.

The entire North Norfolk Coast has apparently been recognized as a Heritage Coast, and thus an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
